How To Become A Driving Instructor

To become an instructor, the Driving Standards Agency requires instructors to have specific knowledge and skills. Kims will teach these skills to enable you to qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I.)

The owner of Kims, Joy Eastman, will give you personalized training. She is a Grade 6 instructor with 41 years experience, so you will be in good hands. Joy has a 98% pass rate.

To qualify you must be over 21, have held a full car license for a minimum of 3½ years and be able to read a vehicle number plate from at least 90ft (27.5 metres). You can wear spectacles or contact lenses for the test. Training is flexible and can be arranged to suit individual requirements.

The Examinations

The Driving Standards Agency set a three part examination. You must pass each stage before moving on to the next.

Part One – Theory/Hazard Perception

This can be taken as many times as you need to pass.

 

The exam consists of one hundred multiple choice questions, Subjects include:

  1. Road Procedure
  2. Car Control
  3. Basic Mechanical Knowledge
  4. Highway Code
  5. Instructional Techniques

Subjects are arranged into four bands, each with an 20% pass mark. The overall pass mark for the exam is 85%.

Hazard Perception Test

Candidates watch 14 clips on a computer. Each clip has one hazard, except one which has two. Candidates click for a developing hazard, which would involve the car slowing down or changing direction. Each hazard has a score of up to five points depending on the timing of response. The pass mark is 57/75. You will have one and a half hours to answer 100 multiple choice questions, and then sit the hazard perception test.

After passing Part I candidates have 2 years to pass parts II and III.

Part Two – Driving

Only three attempts are allowed for this test.

In car training- 10 hourly lessons are given on a one-to-one basis to re-educate driving skills to Driving Standards' requirements.

Following an eyesight test and five questions on basic car maintenance ('show me / tell me') The driving test is conducted by a Driving Standards Agency supervising examiner. The test is approximately one hour long. You will be expected to drive professionally in a disciplined manner along various routes to demonstrate your ability to manoeuver and control the car safely.

The test includes 4 reversing excercises and a controlled (emergency) stop.

Part Three

You are allowed three attempts for this test.

To prepare for this test you will receive 40 hours of training: in-car as per Driving Standards' stipulations to teach students to become driving instructors.

The test takes place in the car and is approximately one hour long. It is split into two stages and consists of role play exercises. Your examiner will take the pupil role and explain the experience he or she has had and the role he or she will be playing. You then teach the examiner accordingly. The test is designed to mirror real-life situations. On passing this test you will become fully qualified.

The Training

Following an initial induction session we will provide you with all of the recommended reading material and PC DVD ROM for you to carry out home study, plus we offer unlimited help and support via telephone and e-mail. We will also provide classroom assistance if required plus a mock test before examination.

Part II Training is given by Joy in car to re-educate your driving skills and get you driving to test standard.Candidates receive 10 hours tuition.

Part III Joy will give you 40+ hours training in car, teaching you to be an instructor. You will then be able to start work as an instructor if you wish on a trainee license in order to gain experience of teaching pupils to drive before taking the final Part III examination. Alternatively, if you want to continue in your present job you can take Part III training until you pass, after which you will become a fully qualified ADI instructor. We guarantee a job placement to all candidates taking training with our company.

CRB Checking (Criminal Records Bureau)

With immediate effect all persons thinking of becoming an Approved Driving Instructor must have a CRB Check carried out, this is for DSA purposes. Please call the Criminal Records Bureau on 0870 850 2455 ask them to send the necessary forms, fill them in and return ASAP as this can take up to six weeks to process. By the time you have completed Part I training, your CRB checks will be returned and there will not be any hold-up in taking Part I examination.

  • Trainee license - £140 (valid for 6 months)(Payable after passing Parts 1 & II)
